Rhode developing new winter footwear generation
Erich Rhode GmbH has successfully developed a special TPU sole unit which, in addition to the well-known favorable characteristics of TPU, combines low weight with good slipping resistance in both dry and wet conditions. Tests by TÜV Rheinland showed the shock absorbing effect to equal that of an ultra-modern sports shoe, the company claims. Besides the prospective bonus of enhanced walking properties - including in bad weather - Rohde´s winter collection will be as much as 15 percent lighter than other brands.
The newly developed sole units are low-weight, non-slipping, resistant to hydrolysis, oil and chemicals, and have good tensile strength. The combination of the latest generation of TPU materials with the special profiling of the soles achieves resistance to slipping closely approaching that of a rubber sole, the company promises.

Nike said it would join a Greenpeace working group focussed on leather. This initiative is Nike´s response to criticism by Greenpeace. In early June the environmental organization published a report revealing the illegal production of cow-hide leather in the Amazon area for processing into footwear, among other items. Greenpeace claims Brazil´s cattle industry is responsible for 80% of the damage to the Amazon forest.
