Automotive leather developments
New trends and technology in the Automotive leather industry:

  • Semi-aniline leather made from the best selection of hides, well retanned and finished with the latest systems enhance the quality and image of Automotive leather; together these products fetch the highest price in the market. The ultimate in technology is required to achieve above all slightly finished, seldom printed, high quality automotive leather.
  • The great surge in demand of wet-white leather especially in Europe requires new precise chemical processes to fulfil car manufacturers specifications.
Beamhouse: we have successfully achieved results in the pre  and main – soaking adding PELLVIT® MN which is a special auxiliary for controlling and maintaining the ph value during the whole soaking process together with PELLVIT® C an enzymatic soaking agent to accelerate the process and create less swelling in the lime. ERHAVIT® EF an amine nitrogen sulphide free liming agent showed in many trials with different raw materials its positive characteristics by accelerating spreading of the liming chemicals, thus reducing liming time.   Our newest nitrogen free deliming agent  DERMASCAL® CD really proved its capacity being used without any other deliming salts. The results showed a homogeneously delimed cross – section.

Tanning: our wet-white started well with SELLATAN® CF new a metal free pretanning and formaldehyde free retanning agent. SELLATAN® CF new pretanned skins have good heat stability. Subsequently increase pH using CROMENO® FNH to prepare the skins for the final pretanned step. SELLASOL® TN-FF a levelling agent, dispersant and formaldehyde free, should be added in combination with SELLATAN® RLS liq., a different type of tanning and retanning agent for wet-white automotive leather with soft, round and uniform filling characteristics. Fatliquor trials in the pickle showed an improvement in tensile strengths and wet-blue softness without interfering in any specifications. We used CORIPOL® GA a highly softening, low fogging synthetic oil for automotive leather in combination with CORIPOL® A, a companion fatliquor, highly concentrated for internal softness and a smooth surface touch.

Retanning:
  • SELLASOL® NG a neutralizing agent with buffering and mellow retanning effect. SELLASOL® NG gives the leather a slowly equal growing ph preparing the hide for further eventual neutralizing salt addition;
  • SELLATAN® RLS liq. is an anionic retanning and tanning automotive syntan with very good characteristics shown in several trials;
  • MAGNOPAL® TGR is an amphotheric polymer which gives considerable improvement in tightness of the fibre structure;
  • The retannage combination of SELLATAN® RLS and MAGNOPAL® TGR is particularly suited for loose wet-blue hides as for example cows. For greater softness we advise adding MAGNOPAL® TGR, a slightly soft polymer, to this retannage combination;
  • We carried out some very interesting trials on wet – white and on chrome automotive leather using SELLATAN® EV gran. related to replace Tara as well use in combination with Tara. SELLATAN® EV is a Syntan which gives the leather similar effects to Tara: good grain break, fullness, roundness, good print retention, better light and yellowing fastness than Tara;
  • When completing retanning it is important to finally fix the dyes and fatliquors after regular fixation with formic acid using SELLA® FIX FRD a formaldehyde – free fixing agent which is above all suitable for the automotive leather type.
